How we started

We started as a tutoring service. Now, we’re an accredited, SEVP-certified English language school.

Today, High Expectations runs a full-time, CEA-accredited English language program in Malden — a long way from the one-on-one SAT tutoring we began with. It’s designed for international students preparing for college, work, or a new life in the United States. F-1 students come from around the world to learn English and U.S. culture here, gaining the language and life skills to advance their academic and professional goals.

    About

Lynn Leonard is the Founder and CEO of High Expectations English Language School and a civil rights attorney with more than 30 years of experience advocating for educational equity and equal opportunity.

As Chief Trial Counsel for the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and later in private practice, she represented individuals facing discrimination in employment, public accommodations, and education, and served as a court-appointed educational advocate for children in need.

In 2015, Lynn founded High Expectations as a college-planning and educational consulting firm. Working closely with local high school students, she began to see a pattern: talented, motivated students were being held back not by ability, but by language. The disparities were familiar.

More than a classroom

Our school is also a community.

Throughout the year, we host events that celebrate the cultures and traditions our students bring with them: winter festivities, Halloween decorating, student appreciation days, Thanksgiving potlucks, and field trips into Boston and to notable landmarks across Massachusetts.

These aren’t extras. They’re how our community gets built — and how new students find their place.
